Re: A huge grid world
I did something similar in the past - described , more recently I gave an overview of the memory usage .
The world was 5120x5120x40 (over a billion rooms), and typically used under 2MB of RAM. It managed this by using virtual rooms generated from templates. Players could dig tunnels and mine for ore, chop down trees and use the wood to construct buildings, plow and seed fields to grow crops, etc.
I thought it would be great, but that was 15 years ago and I still had a lot to learn about players. They decimated the forests, riddled the ground with tunnels, and scrawled offensive messages across the landscape in gigantic letters made from buildings or crop fields.
